What are the different types of kite boards?

Kiteboards come in many shapes and sizes. At first, you may not worry much about this, but as you spend more time kiteboarding, you quickly develop your own preferences and style. Then it's time to choose a kiteboard that suits you. To make this easier, we have divided the different types of kiteboards into two groups: twintip and directional.

  • Twintips: freeride, freestyle, light wind, wakestyle
  • Surfboards: surf/wave, race, hydrofoil, skimboards, wakeskates

What is the difference between a twintip board and a directional board?

There is a big difference between a twintip and a directional board. A twintip is the board you learn to kiteboard with and is actually part of almost all the equipment of a kitesurfer. As mentioned earlier, a twintip has a parallel shape with two bindings and four fins. With a twintip, you can easily ride upwind, do high jumps, and unhooked tricks, for example. There are twintips for freeride, freestyle, wakestyle, light wind, and big air.

A directional board is used by kitesurfers who love nothing more than playing with the waves. A directional board looks like a surfboard and is therefore only used for wave riding, freestyle without straps, or light wind kiteboarding.

The main difference of a twintip is that these directional boards are asymmetrical and therefore have only one front, unlike symmetrical twintips.

What is the best kiteboard for me?

In Surfoon, we believe it's important for you to buy the kiteboard that suits you best. If a kite board It depends on several criteria. To begin with, it is important to know if you want a kiteboard for wave riding (directional), a regular board (twintip), or even a kitefoil (foil).

Secondly, your kitesurfing level plays a big role. As a beginner, you will want a kiteboard with different characteristics than a more advanced kitesurfer. This relates to certain techniques that give a twintip kiteboard specific features such as: the rocker, flexibility, channels, and the size of the board.

Our twintip page explains more about this, the same goes for directional surfboards. As a beginner, you always start with a twintip kiteboard. A twintip easily sails against the wind and you don't have to change the position of your feet when changing direction. Finally, it is important to choose the right size. Choosing the right size of the kiteboard depends on your kitesurfing level and your body weight. As a beginner, you always take a larger size than you normally would.

This makes it easier to get started in the water and to navigate against the wind. Someone weighing 80kg would normally sail on a board of approximately 136/138, but as a beginner, it's a good idea to opt for something larger, like 140 – 144. For personalized advice, you can always contact us. The same goes for directional surfboards. Choose a slightly larger directional board with a bit more volume when starting to learn directional kiteboarding.

What is the best kiteboard for beginners?

If you are starting with kitesurfing, as a beginner kitesurfer, you will start with a twintip kiteboard. Then it is important to choose a twintip that suits you as a beginner. There are three very important factors when choosing your first kiteboard: the rocker, the flexibility, and the size of your twintip kiteboard. To begin with, you will want a twintip with little rocker. The rocker is the curvature of the board; a kiteboard with little rocker is quite flat, which makes it easier to generate speed and sail against the wind. Secondly, flexibility is important. Flexibility refers to the bending ability of a kiteboard; the more flexibility, the easier it is to bend the board. A board with a lot of flexibility provides comfortable riding characteristics, which is also something you want as a beginner kitesurfer. Finally, size is very important. You definitely do not want a kiteboard that is too small. With a larger kiteboard, you will be able to get out riding easily and gain height effortlessly. The size of your kiteboard depends on your weight; the more you weigh, the larger your kiteboard should be. A beginner kitesurfer weighing 80 kilograms will start with a kiteboard of approximately 140 to 144 cm. For personalized advice, of course, you can contact us. So, in summary, there are three factors to consider as a beginner kitesurfer when buying your new kiteboard:

  • Poco rocker
  • Much flexibility
  • A relatively large twintip size

What size of kite board do I need?

When choosing a kiteboard, size is very important! This applies to both a twintip and a directional board. The size of the twintip or directional depends on several factors: your level, your favorite discipline, and your weight. Starting with the choice of the right size twintip. As mentioned earlier, it is wise for a beginner to choose a twintip that is slightly larger than what you would normally take. This will make you more stable, you will ride more easily against the wind, and you will get up on a plane more easily. As you improve, you will need different features in a twintip. The features depend on your favorite riding style. For example, as a tall kitesurfer, you will want a twintip with not too much rocker, many channels, and not too large. But as a freestyle kitesurfer, you will want a lot of rocker and a slightly larger size. For all riding styles, there is a specific twintip, including for light wind and freeride. Speaking in general terms, an advanced kitesurfer weighing 80 kg has a twintip of about 138, and with 75 kg, a 136. This can vary a bit depending on the twintip and the riding style.

Choosing the right size of the directional surfboard is a bit more complicated than your twintip. This is because there is another important factor to consider, namely, the volume. But also when choosing the right directional size, it applies that as a beginner, you take a larger size than an advanced kitesurfer. Even when you mainly use the directional, it is wise to take a directional with a little more volume. If you are an advanced kitesurfer who loves nothing more than riding hard in high waves, then you will want a little less volume and a directional with a narrower outline to facilitate making tighter turns. What is included with my new kite board?

In Surfoon, all twintips come with fins and a handle included. The size of the fins is determined by the supplier, allowing you to get the most out of the kiteboard. A larger fin provides more grip and makes it easier to navigate against the wind, while a smaller fin offers greater maneuverability. Most directional surfboards are sold without fins. This is because the choice of fins can be quite personal. Some kiters prefer large, stiff fins while others prefer small, flexible fins. The product description will often indicate whether the fins are included with the surfboard or not.

Are the bindings and straps included with my kite board? All twintip kite boards are sold without bindings. This allows you to choose the bindings that best fit your kite board. There is a significant difference in kitesurf bindings in terms of fit, size, comfort, and color. Therefore, this is a personal choice, and twintips are sold without bindings. Some directional surfboards come with straps included. If a surfboard comes with straps, it will be indicated in the product description.

What kite board brands does Surfoon sell?

  • Cabrinha: twintip and directional boards
  • Core Kiteboarding: twintip and directional boards
  • F-One: twintip and directional boards
  • North: twintip and directional boards

Should I use a strap with a kiteboard?

We advise against using a strap with a twintip board. The strap can cause your kiteboard to return after an accident at high speed and potentially hit your head. You want to avoid this at all costs, so you should not use a strap. And if you really want to use a strap, for any reason, then use the coiled strap. The coiled strap is less likely to return with force after an accident.

The same story applies to a directional surfboard, but with a small caveat. In the Netherlands, you are unlikely to need a leash. But if you are going to surf somewhere abroad on a reef far out at sea with huge waves, it might be helpful to use a leash.
